About this item

The Solis Dune is a sealed glass disc of coloured sand on a lit base. Turn it over and the sand falls for a few minutes, settling into ridges and peaks that are never the same twice. A touch switch on the base lights it from underneath. 16 cm across, 18.5 cm tall, and it does not do anything else.

  • The same trick every time, and never the same result — Sand falls through a gap between two panes and stacks against whatever is already there. That is the entire mechanism, and it produces a landscape you did not design and cannot repeat. It is the reason these end up on desks of people who claim not to like ornaments.
  • One switch, and that is the interface — Touch the base. That is the whole control scheme. There is nothing to pair, nothing to update, no firmware and no account - which after a shelf of rechargeable devices is a feature.
  • Backlit, not lit — The LED sits under the glass and throws light up through the sand, so the grains read as separate rather than as a solid block. Switched off in daylight it still works; switched on in a dim room is when it earns the desk space.
  • Type — Moving sand art lamp
  • Width — 16 cm
  • Height — 18.5 cm

The same trick every time, and never the same result

Customer reviews

What owners say

  • The two-minute reset

Turn it over between tasks and watch. It has genuinely replaced picking up my phone.
    Nathaniel Oduya
  • Never the same twice

That is the entire appeal and it is true. Two months and I have not seen the same landscape.
    Sabine Herrmann
  • The light is for seeing the sand

Not a lamp. If you want it to light a desk, buy something else.
    Tobias Marrone
  • Best sixteen dollars on my desk

Nothing else at that price gets touched every day.
    Chloe Radcliffe
  • Bought for a colleague, ordered my own

    Which is the review, really.
    Paul Mensah
  • Sealed, so nothing to maintain

No refilling, no spills, no consumables. Turn it over and that is the whole interaction.
    Wendy Kirkpatrick
  • Falls for a couple of minutes, not ten

Some listings imply a long show. It is a few minutes. Still worth it.
    Gerardo Iniesta
  • Good for an anxious brain

Something to do with my hands that does not involve a screen. I underestimated how much that would help.
    Aisha Karim
  • Blue sand against the lit base looks great

Especially in a dim room in the evening.
    Lukas Petersen
  • On my son's desk for homework breaks

Two minutes, then back to work. Better than the alternatives.
    Marguerite Fontaine
  • Glass shows fingerprints

You handle it to turn it over, so of course it does. Cloth in the drawer.
    Eddie Nwachukwu
  • Survived a house move in a box

Not even wrapped particularly well. Arrived intact.
    Ilse van Doorn
  • A gift that costs little and lands well

Given four now. All four still in use.
    Graham Pellow
  • Touch switch is neat

No cable-mounted rocker switch, no button to hunt for. Tap the base.
    Yuki Nakamura
  • Not as big as it looks in photos

16 cm is desk-sized, not mantelpiece-sized. Which is fine, but set your expectations.
    Roland Achterberg
  • Meditative is the right word

I was sceptical about that description. It is accurate.
    Tamsin Blackwell
  • The cheapest thing I own that people ask about

    By a distance.
    Femi Oyediran
  • Works without the light on

Daylight, no power needed, still watchable. Doubles the amount of time it gets used.
    Greta Schwarzkopf
  • Base is light

It is stable enough, but a heavier base would feel better in the hand when you flip it.
    Neville Sharpe
  • Christmas gift for someone with everything

Solved my hardest present of the year for under twenty dollars.
    Lucia Montero

Frequently asked questions

How is it powered?

The supplier does not publish it, which is unusual and which we are not going to paper over with a guess. Lamps of this pattern are normally USB or AA cells. The supplier does not say which.

How long does the sand take to fall?

A few minutes per inversion, then it sits until you turn it again. It is not a continuously moving object.

Can I change the light colour?

There is one touch switch and one lit state. This is not an RGB lamp.

Is it fragile?

It is a glass disc. Treat it as glass - it will not survive a fall onto a hard floor, and a cracked one leaks fine sand.

Does the sand ever wear out?

The disc is sealed. Nothing is added or replaced. Over years the grains round off and the fall gets a little faster; that is the whole ageing story.

Is it a light for a room?

No. The LED exists to backlight the sand. It will not light anything.

How long does shipping take?

Orders are confirmed and processed within 2–3 business days (Monday to Friday, excluding Chinese public holidays), then typically arrive within 6–12 business days in the US, UK, Germany and the rest of Europe, or 8–15 business days in Canada (7–14 elsewhere), tracked all the way to your door.

Is shipping free?

Yes, on every order of $29.99 or more. Below $29.99, standard shipping is a flat $9.99, shown at checkout before you pay.

What is your return policy?

30-day returns, no questions asked. If it isn't right, contact us and we'll arrange the return.

Is there a warranty?

Every product carries a full 1-year warranty on top of the 30-day money-back promise.

Which payment methods do you accept?

All major cards, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay — processed through Shopify's encrypted, PCI-compliant checkout.

How do I track my order?

You'll get a tracking link by email as soon as your order ships, and you can check progress any time on our Track Order page.
