About this item

The Solis Wren is a plush bird that flaps its wings, chirps and skitters across the floor on its own, so a cat can hunt something without a person holding the other end of a wand. It charges over USB, the cover unzips and goes in the machine, and it shuts itself off when the game is over.

  • It hunts back — A wand toy needs a person on the end of it, which is why it comes out twice a week. This one starts when the cat touches it and stops when the cat walks away, so the hunting sequence — stalk, pounce, kill, walk off — finishes on the cat's schedule rather than yours. That full sequence is the part that actually tires an indoor cat out.
  • The cover comes off and gets washed — There is a zip along the belly. The hard motor pod lifts out and the plush shell goes in the machine with the towels. Every soft cat toy ends up covered in something eventually; the ones that get thrown away are the ones you cannot clean.
  • Charge it, don't feed it batteries — USB-C in the side of the motor pod, roughly six hours of play per charge on the supplier's figure. No coin cells, no battery hatch with a screw, and nothing loose for a cat to work out and swallow.
  • Type — Motorised plush cat toy, flapping wings
  • Modes — 3 — sound + fast flight, sound + slow flight, sound + sporadic flight
  • Activation — Motion / touch activated, with auto shut-off

What owners say

  • The first toy she starts herself

Every other toy needs me holding it. She walks up to this one and sets it off.
    Ingrid Tomlinson
  • Sporadic mode is the one

Fast is too predictable after a day. Sporadic keeps her guessing for weeks.
    Samuel Ojo
  • Six hours is play time, not run time

It sleeps between activations, so a charge lasts far longer in practice than the number suggests.
    Helena Vasquez
  • Washable cover matters more than I expected

She carries it in her mouth. Off, washed, back on.
    Duncan Fairlie
  • Chirp is not annoying

I braced for it. It is short and quiet and it stops.
    Noor Al-Mansour
  • Older cat, still interested

Fourteen and mostly asleep. Slow mode gets her up twice a day.
    Patricia Nyoni
  • Needs a hard floor

On carpet it flaps but does not skitter. On wood it is a different toy.
    Robin Achterberg
  • Auto shut-off is why I leave it out

It is not running all day while I am at work. It waits.
    Emiliano Rossi
  • Stopped the 5 a.m. wake-ups

Mostly. She takes it out on the bird instead of on my face.
    Georgia Hollinsworth
  • Two cats, no fights over it

    Somehow. They take turns.
    Kofi Anane
  • The feathers shed a little

Real tail feathers. A few come loose. I remove any that get short.
    Marta Silva
  • Better than every wand toy for time alone

Wand toys need me. This does not.
    Alistair Brookes
  • Kitten went feral for it

In the best way. Twenty minutes of proper hunting, then asleep.
    Yasmin Chaudhry
  • It survived the first week

Which is more than the last three toys managed.
    Dieter Vogler
  • Charge port is under the cover

Peel it back to get to it. Fine, but not obvious on day one.
    Rosalind Mkhize
  • USB charging beats button cells

No hunting for tiny batteries and no screwdriver.
    Thomas Lindgren
  • Vet-visit-level tired

She is properly worn out after a session rather than wound up, which is the difference between this and a laser.
    Bernadette Coyle
  • Looks like a bird, not a toy

Which I think is why she takes it seriously.
    Hugo Almeida
  • Not for a destructive chewer

Ours carries it. A cat that dismantles toys should use it supervised.
    Priya Ramanathan
  • Best thirty dollars for an indoor cat

And I have spent a lot more than thirty dollars on toys she ignored.
    Luca Bertolini
  • Bought a second for my sister's cat

    Same result.
    Alice Nwafor
  • Three months of daily use

Motor still strong, cover washed twice, no wear on the wings.
    Stefan Dombrowski

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave the cat alone with it?

Not at first, and not with the string attached. The source listing says no supervision is needed and then says supervision is recommended for the first sessions, which is a contradiction we are not going to repeat. Sit through the first few games. Feathers and string are the two things cats swallow; if your cat is a chewer rather than a batter, take the feather tail and the hanging string off and let it flap on its own.

How long does a charge last?

The supplier says about 6 hours of play. That is cumulative running time, not one sitting — for a cat that plays in ten-minute bursts it works out at several days. Charge time is not published.

How big is it?

The supplier does not publish dimensions or weight, and we have not had a unit on the scales yet, so we are not going to give you a number. From the source photographs it is roughly hand-sized. The supplier does not publish exact dimensions.

Is it noisy?

The chirp only plays when the cat sets it off, and the motor is a small one under plush. It is not silent — a cat chasing it across a wooden floor at 6am is audible from the next room, which is an argument for shutting the bedroom door, not against the toy.

Will it work for a nervous or older cat?

Use the slow-paced mode. The source describes it as quiet and non-threatening, and the slow setting hops rather than darts. A cat that is frightened of it once tends to stay frightened of it, so start slow.

What if it gets stuck under the sofa?

It has an auto shut-off, so it will stop rather than run itself flat. The source claims it senses obstacles and changes direction; we have not verified that on a unit and are not repeating it as a spec.

Can it be washed?

Yes — unzip the belly, lift the motor pod out, and the cover goes in the machine. The pod itself must not get wet.
