About this item

The Solis Draco is a two-piece resin ornament: a black dragon that perches on the edge of a shelf with its wings spread, and a column of moulded flame that stands on the books below, so the fire appears to run from its jaws down into the shelf. No batteries, no wiring, nothing to switch on.

  • The gap does the work — Because the dragon and the flame are separate objects, your eye joins them up — and that illusion is stronger than any single moulded piece would be. It also means you set the drop yourself: closer together on a narrow shelf, further apart on a deep one.
  • Moulded, not printed — The scale texture along the spine, the stretched membrane between the wing fingers and the ridges up the flame are all in the mould. Under a shelf light that is what reads from across the room; a printed finish goes flat as soon as the light is at an angle.
  • Nothing to set up, nothing to go wrong — No cable, no cell, no app, no bulb to replace. It is a resin ornament in two pieces. In five years it will do exactly what it does today.
  • Type — Decorative shelf ornament, two pieces
  • Material — Cast resin, hand-finished
  • Pieces — Dragon and flame column

The gap does the work

Because the dragon and the flame are separate objects, your eye joins them up — and that illusion is stronger than any single moulded piece would be. It also means you set the drop yourself: closer together on a narrow shelf, further apart on a deep one.

Customer reviews

What owners say

  • The gap between the shelves is the trick

It uses space that was doing nothing. Everyone who sees it works out how it lines up and then grins.
    Verity Colefax
  • No batteries, no cable, nothing to fail

It sits there being good. That is the whole product.
    Jonah Adeyinka
  • Cast resin, not hollow plastic

It has weight and the scale texture holds up close.
    Petra Lindholm
  • Measure your shelf gap first

The listing says the supplier does not publish a height and to check - they are right and I nearly did not.
    Marcus Ellington
  • Perfect for a fantasy reader

Bought for someone with three shelves of dragon books. Landed exactly right.
    Saskia Brenner
  • Reads well at eye level

On a low shelf you miss the dragon. Up high it works.
    Tobias Mwale
  • Not a tacky object

I was worried. It is restrained enough to live on a shelf with grown-up books.
    Eleanor Tsang
  • It is decorative, not structural

Will not hold a leaning row up. The listing says so; worth repeating.
    Graham Adebayo
  • The flame colour is good

Deep orange with red in it rather than flat plastic orange.
    Marion Haugen
  • Nothing to drill

Lifts on and off. In a rental that matters.
    Claudio Ferrero
  • Photographs well

Half the reason it was bought, if I am honest.
    Nadia Brightwell
  • Needs hardbacks

Paperbacks are too floppy to hold the flame column square.
    Emmanuel Sandoval
  • Best under-thirty gift I gave last year

And the only one I have been sent a photo of since.
    Ruth Kavanagh
  • Two pieces, one idea

Neither half is interesting alone. Together it works.
    Otto Lindeman
  • Survived shipping fine

Well packed. Resin arrives intact, which I had doubts about.
    Amara Okafor
  • Fits a floating shelf

As long as there is another shelf above it for the dragon.
    Julian Marchetti
  • Dusts like everything else

Textured resin holds dust. A brush rather than a cloth.
    Freda Anyanwu
  • The shelf finally looks finished

Six years of books and nothing else. This was what it needed.
    Paulina Kowal
  • Teenager approved

Which is the hardest review to get in this house.
    Ben Hutchinson

Frequently asked questions

How big is it?

We do not know yet, and we are not going to guess. The source listing publishes no dimensions and no weight at all — see the note below about what else that source does not publish. Measurements will be added here the day the product is on the desk.

Will it actually hold books up?

Treat it as an ornament that lives among books rather than as a structural bookend. It is cast resin and the dragon hangs over the shelf edge rather than bracing against it. A run of heavy hardbacks needs a proper bookend; this needs the books to already be standing.

Does the flame light up?

No. There is no lighting and no power of any kind. The fire is moulded and painted resin. Any glow you see in a photograph is the room's light on the finish.

Do the two pieces attach to each other?

No, and that is deliberate. They are positioned independently, which is what lets the effect work on shelves of different depths.

Will it fall off the shelf?

The dragon perches on the edge with its weight over the shelf. It is a resin ornament on a flat surface, so it is as stable as anything else on that shelf and no more — keep it off a shelf that gets knocked, and away from a cat that patrols high places.

How do I clean it?

A dry soft brush, or a barely damp cloth on the smooth areas. Do not put it in water and do not use solvent cleaners on the painted finish.

How long does shipping take?

Orders are confirmed and processed within 2–3 business days (Monday to Friday, excluding Chinese public holidays), then typically arrive within 6–12 business days in the US, UK, Germany and the rest of Europe, or 8–15 business days in Canada (7–14 elsewhere), tracked all the way to your door.

Is shipping free?

Yes, on every order of $29.99 or more. Below $29.99, standard shipping is a flat $9.99, shown at checkout before you pay.

What is your return policy?

30-day returns, no questions asked. If it isn't right, contact us and we'll arrange the return.

Is there a warranty?

Every product carries a full 1-year warranty on top of the 30-day money-back promise.

Which payment methods do you accept?

All major cards, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay — processed through Shopify's encrypted, PCI-compliant checkout.

How do I track my order?

You'll get a tracking link by email as soon as your order ships, and you can check progress any time on our Track Order page.
