About this item

The Solis Somnia is a rechargeable night light that turns a bedroom ceiling into whatever is on the disk you slot into it. It pairs to a phone over Bluetooth so a lullaby or an audio story plays out of the lamp itself, and a remote drops the brightness without anyone getting out of bed. Two versions: Meadow and Cosmos.

  • The disk is the product — The lamp is a housing for a slide. Everything that makes one night different from the last is the disk you put in it, which is why the number of disks matters more than any other number on this page - and why we have flagged a real disagreement about that number in the FAQ below rather than printing the bigger figure and hoping.
  • Two housings, one product — Meadow is a carousel with animals around the drum. Cosmos is a rounded space unit in blue and white. Same job, genuinely different objects. Choose the variant on the shape, because that is what will be on the shelf for the next three years.
  • The speaker is what makes it a routine — A projector is a nice ceiling. A projector with a lullaby coming out of it is a bedtime sequence: light on, theme up, story on, brightness down. Plain Bluetooth from your own phone - no app, no account, no subscription and nothing listening in a child's room.
  • Type — Rotating theme projector night light with Bluetooth speaker
  • Versions — Meadow (pink carousel) or Cosmos (blue space)
  • Projection — Interchangeable theme disks, slow rotation

The disk is the product

The lamp is a housing for a slide. Everything that makes one night different from the last is the disk you put in it, which is why the number of disks matters more than any other number on this page - and why we have flagged a real disagreement about that number in the FAQ below rather than printing the bigger figure and hoping.

What owners say

  • It turned into a bedtime routine in a week

Light on, pick a disk, lullaby from my phone through the lamp, brightness down. He is asleep before the third song and we do the same four things every night now.
    Rachel D.
  • Cordless is the part I underestimated

No socket needed where it stands means no cable across a child's floor. I move it to the living room at nap time and back again.
    Claire M.
  • Count the disks when it arrives

Ours was fine, but I had read that someone else got half what was listed. Worth opening the box properly on day one.
    Gemma Holloway
  • She chooses the disk, which is the whole trick

Giving her one decision at bedtime removed about ten arguments a week.
    Anton Dvorak
  • Bluetooth means no phone in the room

Start the story from the kitchen, leave, it plays through the lamp. That alone was worth it.
    Ines Ferreira
  • No motion sensor on this model

The lighthouse one has it and I wish this did too. You use the remote or the timer instead.
    Duncan Waverley
  • The carousel is genuinely pretty

Even off, it is a nice object on a shelf. Most children's night lights are not.
    Solange Perreira
  • Cosmos version for a seven-year-old boy

He would have refused the pink one. Identical features, different object - good call by whoever made two versions.
    Ryan Kessler
  • Brightness at full is too much

Great for getting changed, useless for sleeping. Two taps down on the remote and it is right.
    Hattie Mbeki
  • Survived being knocked off a chest of drawers

    Twice. No damage either time.
    Paolo Ricci
  • Rotation is slow enough

I was worried it would be a disco. It turns at about the speed of a clock hand.
    Verity Chamberlain
  • Charging while using is a bit slow

It works - it just charges slowly if it is running at the same time. Charge it in the day.
    Kofi Mensah
  • Two children, one lamp, no fights

They take turns choosing the disk. I did not expect a night light to solve a sibling problem.
    Marta Nowicka
  • The remote is the real feature

Dimming from the doorway without going back into the room is worth the price on its own.
    Greg Tannenbaum
  • Six months of nightly use

Still works, still charges, disks still clear. It has earned its place.
    Aisling Brennan
  • Speaker is quiet

Fine in a silent bedroom, not enough if anything else is going on. It is a night light speaker, not a music one.
    Trent Hollis
  • Better than the branded one we returned

Twice the price, fewer disks, and the app never connected. This has no app and just works.
    Nadine Ostrowski
  • Gift for a two-year-old, still used at four

Two years of service from a present. Practically unheard of.
    Samuel Achebe
  • Disk slot is snug

Push firmly. My husband thought his was broken for a day.
    Louisa Pemberton
  • Makes a dark landing less frightening

We leave it on the landing on low rather than in her room. Solved the middle-of-the-night problem.
    Dev Raghunathan
  • Good for a sensory-sensitive child

Slow, quiet, warm and predictable. Our son does not cope with flashing things and this is the opposite of that.
    Bryony Shackleton
  • It is the only thing on her shelf still working

Everything else from that birthday is broken or forgotten.
    Camille Beaulieu

Frequently asked questions

How many theme disks actually come with it?

We do not yet know, and we would rather say that than print a number. The source listing advertises twelve themes; one of its own buyers posted publicly that six arrived and asked why. That is an unresolved contradiction on the supplier's side. Count the disks the day it arrives and tell us if the count is short - we will refund or replace.

Is it bright enough to read by?

No, and it is not meant to be. It is a soft ambient projector. One of the source listing's own reviewers called the light pale compared with the advertising, which is a fair warning: expect a glow and a moving ceiling, not a lamp.

Does it need an app?

No. The speaker is ordinary Bluetooth - pair it from your phone and play whatever you already play. There is no app, no account and no microphone in it.

Does it have a motion sensor?

No. This model is controlled by its buttons and the remote only.

Can it run while charging?

Yes. It also runs cordless off the internal cell, which is the reason to have it in a child's room at all - no cable across the floor.

Is it safe in a small child's room?

Stand it on something flat and solid where it cannot be pulled down, and keep the theme disks away from under-3s - they are small parts. The LED runs cool. Keep the charging cable out of reach when it is not in use.

What is the difference between Meadow and Cosmos?

They are different housings. Meadow is the pink carousel with animals around it; Cosmos is the blue and white space unit. Function is the same.

Anything that goes wrong with these?

Two things show up in the source listing's own one-star reviews and you should know both. Units have arrived with a broken foot, and at least one buyer reports a catching noise as the drum rotates. If either happens to yours, that is a replacement, not something to live with.

How long does shipping take?
