The gap does the work
Because the dragon and the flame are separate objects, your eye joins them up — and that illusion is stronger than any single moulded piece would be. It also means you set the drop yourself: closer together on a narrow shelf, further apart on a deep one.
Moulded, not printed
The scale texture along the spine, the stretched membrane between the wing fingers and the ridges up the flame are all in the mould. Under a shelf light that is what reads from across the room; a printed finish goes flat as soon as the light is at an angle.
