In short

A cat punching bag toy is a small, soft bag on a flexible stem with a suction cup base, usually with two little boxing gloves hanging on cords. When a cat swats it, the bag wobbles and springs back and the gloves swing — so the cat swats again. The Solis Jab is about 38 cm (15 in) tall with a 7 cm bag, and sticks to smooth floors, tiles and glass. Play together and put it away afterwards, because it has cords.

Why do cats box?

Swatting is how cats test, catch and play-fight. Kittens do it to each other from a few weeks old; adult cats do it to dangling things, tails and the edge of the sofa. A toy that moves back after a hit invites the next swat, which is why a bag on a springy stem keeps a cat busy far longer than a toy that simply falls over.

How do you make the suction base hold?

  1. Pick a smooth floor. Tiles, laminate, sealed wood or glass. Carpet, rugs and rough stone will not hold suction.
  2. Clean both sides. Wipe the spot and the cup; dust is the most common reason a cup lets go.
  3. Press firmly from the centre, then lock the joint at the angle you want.
  4. Re-seat it now and then. After a week of hard boxing, lift and press it down again.

Is a cat punching bag safe?

Treat it like any toy with cords: play together, and put it away when you are out or asleep. Check the cords and the bag now and then and replace the toy if anything is worn. If your cat chews rather than swats, swap to a chase toy instead.

Frequently asked questions

Does the suction cup work on carpet?

No. It needs a smooth, non-porous surface such as tiles, laminate, sealed wood or glass.

Does it contain catnip?

No catnip is included. Rub a little on the gloves if your cat likes it.

How tall is the Solis Jab?

About 38 cm (15 in); the bag is about 7 cm (2.8 in) wide.
